Kaleidoscope Gallery opened its doors in November with a celebration of colour and light. The gallery promises to bring to the Paddington art scene, something a little different.

What sets Kaleidoscope apart is the artist run philosophy set up by gallery director Sami Mitchell, an installation artist and colour theorist. “The aim of Kaleidoscope is to take the good elements of the commercial gallery and the artist run initiative and create a new type of gallery, one that is hands on, engaging and cutting edge.” She said. “I want art lovers and buyers to nurture the careers of artists with us from the beginning and for us to present art in all its  mediums and various forms for them to enjoy.

It is this hands on approach, which led to a collaborative first show between Ms Mitchell herself and fellow installation artist Erin Curtis. Entitled ILLUMINATE, the show was a visual feast of colour and light using sculptural pieces of coloured bottles and video installation.

With a steady stream of artists already lined up and many more approaching the team at Kaleidoscope daily, it is clear that Paddington is in need of this new type of art space.

“We have been overwhelmed with support from Paddington locals and from and artists wanting to have shows. I am excited to present these artists to the public, there is some fantastic emerging contemporary art talent out there.” Ms Mitchell said.

Paddington has long been regarded as the gallery centre of Sydney, and William Street, where Kaleidoscope is located, is arguably one of Sydney’s most stylish streets. The fantastic location of the gallery is just one of the many aspects of the appeal of the space. But in this ever changing kaleidoscopic art space, just one visit will never be enough.
